The circular problem
You know your cost. You know the profit you want. You know the platform takes a percentage plus a couple of fixed fees. What you do not know is the listing price, and the fee depends on it. Raise the price to cover the fee and the fee goes up too.
So you do not add. You solve. Write the target as what has to be left after fees, then rearrange:
item price = (what you need after fees + fixed fees) divided by (1 minus the percentage fees), less any shipping you charge the buyer.
Infill does that arithmetic and tells you the item price to put on the listing, together with what the platform keeps and what you keep.
What it costs to add a percentage instead
Same print as the home page: 5.10 of cost, priced at a 50 percent margin, so 10.20 has to be left after fees. Sold on Etsy, no shipping charged.
| Method | Listed at | Platform keeps | You keep | Against target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add the fee percentage to 10.20 | 11.27 | 1.68 | 4.49 | 0.61 short |
| Solve for the price | 11.96 | 1.76 | 5.10 | on target |
Sixty-one cents on a twelve euro item is six percent of the sale and twelve percent of the profit, on every unit, forever. On a shop doing a few hundred orders a year it is the difference between a hobby that pays for filament and one that does not.
The channels Infill carries
These are the schedules stored in the app. They are fixed in this version, so treat them as a starting point and check a quote against your own seller terms: fee schedules change and differ by country.
| Channel | Listing fee | Transaction | Payment | Fixed payment fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct sale | none | none | none | none |
| Etsy | 0.20 | 6.5 percent | 4.0 percent | 0.30 |
| eBay | none | 13.25 percent | none | 0.30 |
| Shopify | none | none | 2.9 percent | 0.30 |
| Amazon Handmade | none | 15.0 percent | none | none |
Marketplace fees and VAT on the quote are part of Infill Pro, a single purchase and never a subscription. The cost breakdown, the selling price and everything else on this page's arithmetic are in the free app.
Tax, shipping and the total the buyer sees
Shipping you charge the buyer is part of the order the platform takes its cut of, so it belongs in the equation rather than being bolted on afterwards. Tax lands on top of item price plus shipping.
What the buyer pays is the anchor everything else is rounded to. Rounding each field on its own produces a quote whose rows do not add up to their own total, which is exactly the kind of thing a customer notices and you do not. Infill rounds the figures the buyer and the marketplace actually transact, then takes the rest as the residue, and never at the seller's expense.
If you sell as a small business without VAT, one switch removes the tax and adds the required note to the quote.
